During a chemical peel, a solution is applied to the skin, causing dead cells to peel off. This reveals the skin beneath, which is usually smoother, less wrinkled, and has a more even colour than the old skin. The Procedure

Prior to performing the chemical peel, the skin must be prepped for several weeks with preconditioning creams (which may include Retin-A, glycolic acids, pigment lighteners, and sunscreens). The chemical peel itself is performed in the office. The skin is first thoroughly cleansed to remove excess oils. One or more chemical solutions – such as glycolic acid, Jessner's solution, or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) – are used. Dr. Singh will recommend the best peeling agent for your skin type, the condition being treated, and the amount of healing time your schedule allows.

During the procedure, most patients experience a sensation of heat, which lasts about 5 to 10 minutes, followed by a stinging sensation. A deeper peel may necessitate pain medication during or after the procedure, and will require longer recovery.

After Treatment

Recovery after treatment depends upon the depth of the peel. For light or superficial peels, patients can return to their usual activities on the same day and will experience only slight pinkness. For deeper peels, patients may see some swelling and blisters that will peel off in 5 to 7 days. Protection from sun overexposure immediately after a chemical peel is important since the new skin is fragile and more susceptible to injury. Dr. Singh will recommend proper follow-up care.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion safely and effectively removes dead or damaged skin cells and improves the skin's appearance. The procedure exfoliates with a jet of fine mineral crystals passing over the skin's surface. The crystals and dead skin cells are then vacuumed up – resulting in skin that is clearer, softer, smoother, fresher and younger-looking.
