About Restylane

A new definition of beauty.

Truth be told, beauty is not in the eye of your beholder, or in your hair, cheekbones, makeup or fashion sense. Beauty - true beauty - is found in the heart; it's a feeling, a sense of inner satisfaction. And it's there, in beauty's translation from inside to out that Restylane feels so right. For true beauty lies within us all - sometimes, it just needs a little help to surface. Find beauty with Restylane.

What you should know.
If you're interested in receiving Restylane treatments, you'll want to know more about the effects and safety of the Restylane procedure. Here are the answers to some questions you may have.

What is Restylane?
Restylane consists of 20 mg/mL of stabilized hyaluronic acid and physiological sodium chloride solution with a pH of 7. All Restylane products are clear, transparent and viscous gels. The only difference between the products is the size of the gel particles. In contrast to some similar products, the hyaluronic acid in Restylane is not produced from animals. This means that there is no risk of animal or human disease being transmitted or allergic reactions being elicited if you are sensitive to common foods, such as beef, chicken and eggs.

What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is found throughout your body. It gives volume to the skin, lubricates the joints and gives the eyes their shape. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is stabilized for a long duration and is not of animal or human origin.

Is Restylane safe?
Yes. Restylane has been used safely by dermatologists and plastic surgeons worldwide since 1996. Because Restylane is non-animal-based and fully biocompatible, allergy testing is not required. There is virtually no risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction. The most commonly reported side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within two to three days.

What is the history of Restylane?
After many years of research, Q-Med AB, the Swedish manufacturer that licenses out its products to Medicis Aesthetics Canada, succeeded in developing NASHATM, a Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid, to replace the loss of volume in the skin. The first product, Restylane, was launched in 1996. Before this, only collagen made from cowhides and hyaluronic acid made from rooster combs had been available.

Treatment Procedure

If you're considering undergoing a Restylane procedure, here's information on how the treatment works and what you can expect.

Restylane is a gel that is injected into the skin to add volume to lips and lift wrinkles and folds. Restylane consists of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance already present in your body. Once in the skin, Restylane works by creating volume. Some dermal fillers are derived from animal substances. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane is from a non-animal source.

How is a treatment performed?
During treatment, crystal-clear Restylane gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The gel produces volume under the wrinkle, which is lifted and smoothed. When enhancing lips or facial contours, Restylane adds volume and shape to the treated area.

How long will the treatment session take?
Treatment with Restylane is very quick and easy. As no pre-test is needed, the treatment can be carried out immediately. A treatment generally takes 30 minutes, although the time varies depending on the correction you wish to have performed.

What can be treated?
Restylane can be used to smooth folds and wrinkles, enhance lips and shape facial contours. The most common areas are the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows), the nasolabial folds (from the bottom of the nose to the corner of the mouth) and the lips, although other sites can also be treated. Very superficial or very deep wrinkles may be difficult to correct. Please consult your physician for an assessment.

Do the injections hurt?
Restylane is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts by an ultrafine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient, and results are practically instantaneous. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, your physician may anesthetize the treatment area.

How soon will I see the results?
The results can be seen immediately.

What will I look like after the treatment?
Immediately after the treatment, you can expect slight redness, swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. After a lip treatment, the lips may become swollen and look somewhat uneven. This can persist for a few days up to a week. If the discomfort continues, please contact your physician.
Safety Information: The most commonly reported side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within two to three days.

What should I bear in mind after my Restylane treatment?
During the first 48 hours after your treatment, do not massage or rub the treated area. If you have had a lip enhancement, avoid puckering your lips for the first two days after the treatment. Until the initial swelling and redness have resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. in a solarium or by sunbathing) or extreme cold. Safety Information: The most commonly reported side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within two to three days.

Can Restylane be removed?
No. However, Restylane dissolves naturally with time. If you feel uncertain about the desired result, you can choose to have the treatment done in steps on different occasions.

Can Restylane replace surgical procedures?
No, although Restylane is sometimes used in conjunction with surgery to fill out wrinkles that cannot be removed by surgery.

What should I think about before I have a Restylane treatment?
Look at yourself in the mirror and think about the result you are expecting. Try to convey your expectations to your physician before the treatment and ask him or her what is possible.

Studies have shown that the average treatment results last up to six months or, in some cases, even longer. The unique NASHATM technology helps maintain the cosmetic effect until the injected material is nearly gone. Individual results may vary.
