Injectable Filler Basics

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is found throughout your body. In the skin, it adds volume and hydration. Injectable fillers such as JUVÉDERM, Restylane, and Perlane use hyaluronic acid to fill in wrinkles and add volume to thinning facial features, restoring a more youthful appearance. The most commonly treated areas are the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows), the nasolabial folds (from the bottom of the nose to the corner of the mouth) and the lips, although other applications are possible.

JUVÉDERM

JUVÉDERM is available in several formulations for maximum effectiveness. These include JUVÉDERM Ultra, JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus, and JUVÉDERM REFINE. This filler is a very smooth gel that flows easily beneath the skin and provides results that last up to one year.

JUVÉDERM can be combined with BOTOX® Cosmetic for a Soft Lift™. A Soft Lift combines the volume enhancement of a filler with the wrinkle-reducing power of BOTOX for a more comprehensive result.

Restylane & Perlane

Restylane consists of stabilized hyaluronic acid and physiological sodium chloride solution. Made by the same company, Perlane is a similar solution, but it contains larger particles of hyaluronic acid, making it more appropriate for injection deeper within the skin. Results usually last at least 6 months, although some of our Edmonton Restylane and Perlane patients have seen results that last significantly longer.

Injectable Filler Treatments

Treatment with injectable fillers is generally very quick and easy. As no pre-test is needed, the procedure can be carried out immediately. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, Dr. Singh may anesthetize the treatment area.

A treatment generally takes 30 minutes, although the time varies depending on your desired improvements. During the procedure, the filler material is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The gel plumps up the skin from beneath, reducing wrinkles and improving the shape of facial contours.

Immediately after treatment, you may see slight redness, swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal reaction to the injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. After a li p treatment, the lips may become swollen and look somewhat uneven. This can persist for a few days up to a week.

During the first 48 hours after your treatment, do not massage or rub the treated area. For Edmonton patients who choose lip fillers, it is advisable to avoid puckering your lips for the first two days after the treatment. Until the initial swelling and redness have resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat or extreme cold.
